How to connect your Mac to your PS3 without using EyeConnect

Last night my friend Jon Dewitt gave me an assist on connecting my Mac to my PS3 as a media server. I thought for sure that I could just mount my MacBook Pro as a hard drive of sorts via USB, or for sure connect to my PS3 through my WiFi network but neither of these options worked and I was left stumped.
After some forum crawling I found an option using Elgato’s program EyeConnect. I didn’t read much into (I get impatient) and just installed EyeConnect and went for it. My PS3 was able to see the files on my MacBook Pro, but it didn’t play any music or videos; I could only browse photos. Then I read more and found that there were an abundant amount of issues with this method because it was using EyeConnect as a work around and not what it was actually intended for (which I also didn’t read about ;] ).
While I was trying the EyeConnect method Jon came across MediaLink by Nullriver. MediaLink costs $20 but it is totally sweet and works perfectly. I know that I personally hate buying an app that I am not sure is going to worth it, but take my word for it, it works awesome and I am listening to my iTunes library as I write this without any chords plugged into my computer to my stereo.

What is even sweeter is that Nullriver made it so that it is iLife compatible, not just iTunes, it can browse iPhoto and your movies easily. And even better, you can browse all the files on your computer if you set the correct permissions and migrate any media you want over to your PS3 if you don’t want to always stream your media (some larger video files played a little choppy when I was doing system intensive stuff on my comp).
MediaLink is incredibly easy to setup, just install, set your preferences and activate. You will have complete access to all your media on your Mac from your PS3. I highly recommend shelling out the 20 dollars to get this app, no work arounds, or hacks, it just works (>< had to throw that in there, I am working on an Apple product).
