So on February 28th Jill and I got engaged! After four awesome years the time was right. This is how it went down:
Jill and I started to get antsy about getting married because we were thinking about future living arrangements and were tired of trying to figure out how we were going to coordinate living situations and all that crap. There was definitely more to it than just the living situation that made us decide to get married but it got the ball rolling.
I wanted to get a ring on her finger as soon as I could so she wouldn’t feel weird planning stuff so I secretly got a ring made based on a design she saw online from a local ring maker. The guy was super awesome. I went in there a week before I was going to ask her to marry me and he said that he would be able to make me a ring in 4 days. During that four days I kept on telling a disappointed Jill that it would take at least a month to get a ring made :)
By the following Tuesday I had the finished ring. The next day the 27th, I picked up Jill from school and we headed off on the trip I told her we were going to take for our 4 year anniversary. We got in the car and got on I-5 south and she got a little suspicious so I handed her a map of our trip to San Francisco.
We basically drove all day but we totally loved it, traveling is one of our favorite things to do. When we got to San Francisco we checked in to the Hotel California. We had stayed there in the past when I picked up Jill from Spain and we drove up the coast back to Oregon. The next day we woke up when we felt like it and headed out to Union Square, which is only about 4 blocks away from the hotel. We did some shopping at Urban Outfitters (Jill’s favorite store) then we went to Borders to get some books (Jill is a book junkie).
After our little shopping spree I took Jill on a cable car ride down to Hyde Pier and Ghirardelli Square. It was cool seeing the old factory and we had a cool view of both Alcatraz and the Golden Gate bridge. After we walked around and checked things out we got some lunch at a restaurant nearby. After lunch we walked back to the pier. I asked her if she wanted to go sit on the beach and look at her anniversary surprise.
I had created a book that was basically a graphic history of our four years together. It had all our movie tickets stubs, notes, plane tickets, etc. At the end of the book I wrote a little not that said “And now everything changes…” At that point I took out the ring and got down on one knee and proposed. It was a very surreal and wonderful moment.
After that we got ice cream at Ghirardelli Square and enjoyed the rest of our time in San Francisco. Here are some pictures:
